The Glossary
The adventurous are sure to find a haven in the lowlands of the Terai Region and the steep ascents of the Mahabharat Range. As the range is located in the world's most mountainous country, Nepal, the tourists may be trudging on even plains one moment, and then rugged cliffs the next. Not surprisingly, these are often the sites of arduous and exciting treks and also function as routes for tourists heading towards the surrounding attractions of the country.
Trekkers along this route are bound to run into some traditional Newari villages, such as Magars, Gurungs, Giripuris, and Chepangs. One may even try the local fare, such as dhindo, which is corn or barley flour made into a thick paste and then eaten with a kind of vegetable curry. The Chepang, in particular, still believe in shamanism - worshipping natural deities like Fire, Wind, and Water. A particular highlight is seeing the smattering of rhododendron (Nepal's National Flower) groves that are just coming into bloom.
Excellent bird-watching opportunities abound, and one usually will be able to see the mountain bulbuls, Kalij pheasants, warblers, flycatchers, and Eurasian jays that thrive in the area. In addition, hilltops offer nice views of the Himalayan Mountains, particularly the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhare Peaks.
The less adventurous types, though, can head to the nearby Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace, or The Ancient Cities of Janakpur and Tansen. Tourist-favorites include Pokhara and the Royal Chitwan National Park. One can even make his way to the border crossings connecting Nepal to neighboring India, such as Sunauli, Varanasi, Bhairawa, and Darjeeling.
