The Glossary
A dazzling collage of scenic nature, traditional lakeshore villages, passing tourists, and strings of bustling shops that line modern highways, Pokhara is indisputably one of the best tourist destinations Nepal has to offer. Whatever one's interest is, may it be trekking, sight-seeing, shopping, or exploring, Pokhara readily offers its attractions for adventure. Not surprisingly, most visitors to the country hardly ever head out without first experiencing this wonderful town.
Situated by the edge of the Seti Gandeki Valley, Pokhara is a popular starting point for trekkers bound for the mountains of the Annapurna Range, while also serving as the finish line of the famed Annapurna Circuit Trek. One of the trail's arresting sights is the Machhapuchhare Peak, whose perfect pyramid shape towers over the town. Another is the Phewa Tal Lake, an idyllic playground for those who go boating on its waters. The nature retreats of the Begnas Tal and Rupa Tal Lakes, separated by a forested hillock called the Panchabhaiya Danda, make for a relatively secluded adventure.
Those seeking Pokhara's cultural heritage can't go wrong with the Barahi Temple dedicated to the goddess Ajima. Built in a two-tiered pagoda style, it is found almost in the middle of the Phewa Tal Lake. Meanwhile, scenic views are offered at the summit of the so-called World Peace Pagoda nestled at the top of a hill, and is frequented by Buddhist devotees. The Bindbyabasini Temple, on the other hand, pays homage to the goddess Bhagwati, an incarnation of Shakti. Devotees flock to the temple especially on Saturdays.
Avid shoppers or travelers looking to stock up on supplies are advised to visit the Old Bazaar, a hotspot of markets crammed with goods that are tended to by their ethnically diverse traders. History buffs will be rewarded by the displays of the Pokhara Museum, which illustrate the lifestyle and history of the ethnic Newari tribes. Another is the Annapurna Museum that brandishes a collection of wildlife models, precious stones, and volcanic rocks taken from the Annapurna Range itself.
