As the main district and de facto capital of Nauru, Yaren keeps the offices of the country's parliament as well as the only air terminal. Banked on the south of Nauru, Yaren--"Makwa" or "Moqua" in the early times--has a population of a little more than a thousand. Its only tourist destinations are the small underground lake Moqua Well and the nearby Moqua Caves, which are a series of underground grottos.
Although deprived of tourist attractions, it is just a short cab or bus away from Nauru's most popular tourist sites—Meneng and Buada. Meneng is a haven for surfers because of the Anibare Bay, whose currents also attract deep-sea and sport fishers. Buada, on the other hand, is famed for the Buada Lagoon, an enclosed body of fresh water considered as one of the most beautiful and romantic hideaways in Nauru.
Yaren's populace are among Nauru's 96 percent literates and they had been sent to Australia for their university education during the country's economic boom, which was triggered by Nauru's large exports of phosphates (fertilizer from fossilized bird droppings) to Australia. With the phosphates almost gone, Yaren and the whole of Nauru returned to servile dependence on international financial aid. The country also relies on imports for food. Instead of Australia, the children are now being sent to Fiji for their university education, although local schooling facilities and technologies in Yaren and the rest of Nauru remain advanced compared with their other Micronesian counterparts. Advanced techniques such as Internet research and video conferencing are widely used as teaching methods in the schools of Nauru.
