Marked by its stark beauty and sublime desert scenery, Western Namibia is a spellbinding surprise to the eyes of first time travelers on account of its fascinating color and ambience. True to form, the region holds sights that never fail to fire the imagination starting from the Atlantic Coast and the towering dunes of Namib to the spanning salt basin of the Kalahari Desert and the surrounding bush of Etosha National Park known as the "Great White Place," notable for housing a great collection of wildlife. Those who fancy road trips and abundant sunshine should also pay a visit to this side of Africa.
A visit to the south of the region will take visitors to the parched landscape of Sossusvlei noted for its ocher to golden sand color punctuated with vast stretches of greenery. What makes the trip equally beguiling is the sight of the snow-capped mountain ranges from afar which look like a patchwork made by nature sitting quietly in the expanse of the wilderness.
From Sousuvlei, visitors might also hike the Namibian desert dunes of Namib Rand Nature Reserve to uncover the amazing display of flora and fauna that have endured the arid conditions of Namib for centuries. Here visitors can mingle freely with the grazing African antelopes and white gazelles apart from the desert beetles that cross the path leaving their tiny prints in the sand.
Next stop would be the Naukluft Park located at the west side of Namib Rand. Originally the haven of the Hartmanns mountain zebra, Naukluft has metamorphosed into a nature park where camping and nature trekking is possible with a guide in addition to the usual diversions such as camel rides, riding the 4x4 wheel or sand boarding. Another draw would be the Etosha National Park. This game reserve has a series of water holes in its southern tip providing visitors a rewarding view of its spectacular array of wildlife.
After a series of nature treks to the wild side of Western Namibia, visitors also need some time to cool off and savor the quirky Swakopmund, the most popular seaside resort in Namibia. Besides the promise of water sports adventure, the place is a wonderful spot to hang out with a great choice of restaurants, shops and cafes noted for their Germanic and African cuisine.
