The sweeping forest of quiver trees at sunset, a walk through the sea of giant aloes or to the edge of Fish River Canyon, exploring a ghost town hemmed in the desert, or a rejuvenating hot bath at Ai-ais Nama Hot Spring is Southern Namibia in a nutshell. Dubbed as a "Forbidden Territory" (Sperrgebiet), Southern Namibia holds some of the most scintillating landscapes in the entire Namibia starting from the Fish River Canyon, which one can find in any geological history book, to the Germanic town of Lüderitz.
Surrounded by the arid savannah of Kalahari and the astounding breadth of the Namib, Southern Namibia was once hidden to the world due to the rich deposits of gems underneath. Today, the region is visited by hordes of people ranging from simple holiday makers wanting some "sweet escape" to adventurous backpackers looking for some real adventure.
Getting to the Fish River Canyon for the first time is an experience similar to a dreamlike voyage to the vast rocky landscape of Mars with the series of serrated cliffs that surround the world's second largest canyon, second only to the immensity of the Grand Canyon of Arizona in the United States.
The Fish River which usually flows in the months of March and April is one of the usual detours in the area apart from the Fish River Canyon and the Hikers' Viewpoint where one can join a five day fish river trail hike to the expanse of Fish River Canyon. There is also a hot spring where visitors can have an invigorating bath before getting to the town of Lüderitz to visit some worthwhile spots such as the Goerke Haus of Lieutenant Hans Goerke, the Felsenkirche, a Lutheran church close to the Diamond Hill, and the Lüderitz Museum to learn a little bit of Southern Namibia's history.
