For years, Northeastern Namibia used to receive only a small trickle of visitors due to the conflict at Caprivi Strip (also known as Okavango Strip) between Namibia and Angola. Today, however, Northeastern Namibia is no longer a forbidden zone; the area is once again safe and open to embrace visitors of all kinds.
Noted of its rich mineral deposits and teeming wildlife, one major attraction of the region is the Bwabwata National Park which houses a mosaic of parklands and reserves such as the Mahango Game Reserve, the Kwando Core Area also known as West Caprivi Triangle, the Buffalo Core, the non-operating Caprivi Game Reserve and the misnomer Popa Falls - a series of rapids that drop off about 4 meters across the Okavango River. Apart from the promise of eco-tourism opportunities aimed at conserving the threatened wildlife that thrives in the area, visitors can simply roam around the Bwabwta and be in serene harmony with nature.
Lodges tucked around the Bwabwata National Park are also an added attraction of the region. The Ichigo, Lianshulu and Divava Okavango Lodges are among the many lodges that offer a plethora of activities to enjoy starting from lounging at the luxurious chalets or bush bar to cruising the Popa Falls while watching the hippos and crocodiles hiding in the dense marshland. The lodges also offer complimentary pools and sauna where one can indulge in a rejuvenating spa in one of its treatment rooms.
Those wanting some off the beaten adventure can have a day trip to the nearby villages of Katima Mulilo, Chobe and Kwando near the Zambezi River at the outpost of Rundu or to the Mahango Game Reserve famed for its "thirsty elephants." Souvenirs are available at the Khemo Open Market which offers a diverse selection of Kavangao woodcarvings great for interior designing.
