Inle's flat and placid surface contrasts with its jagged, mountainous surroundings. The tranquil lake is brought to life by the many stilt-elevated Intha villages around the lake. A number of resorts and guesthouses by Inle accommodate tourists who just want a nice place to relax, spend a weekend in, or learn of the natives and their hybrid-culture.
The Intha people live by the lake as they use it for fishing livelihood and watering their crops. Their gardens float above the lake's surface. A very peculiar trait of these villagers is the way they row their slender canoes: using their legs to which the paddles have been tied. Fish and rice are most common ingredients of the local staple food of the Intha, and their delicacies include htamin gyin (kneaded rice with fish and potatoes) and hnapyan gyaw (tofu fried twice). The natives also take pride in their fine fabrics called Inle Longyi, made out of lotus fiber.
The best time to visit Inle Lake is during the months of September and October, when they celebrate the Hpaung Daw U Festival where four golden Buddha images are carried through the lake in luxurious boats. The whole ceremony lasts for about three weeks, and is shortly followed by the Thadingyut when the devotees wear new clothes in commemoration of the end of the Buddhist Lent.
