The Glossary
Fondly called "Pearl of the Indian Ocean," Vilankulo (formerly Vilanculos) was once a sleepy fishing hamlet in the Vilankulo District of Inhambane. Now, this islet off The Coast of Mozambique is a famous beach town and portal to the Paradise Island, Inhaca and Barazuto Archipelago.
More than just a gateway to Barazuto, Vilankulo has miles-long fine white beaches, untapped coral reefs, and hundreds of bird species that have long attracted caravan-riders and backpackers alike. With the opening of several hotels, resorts, and chalets, as well as the burgeoning of the Vilankulo Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary, Vilankulo is little by little becoming an up-and-coming vacation hub this corner of Africa.
In Vilankulo, visitors can engage in a variety of fun-filled activities from scuba diving, snorkeling, and sailing by dhows to the old-fashioned deep-sea fishing. Aside from engaging in water sports, visitors can also arrange a picnic or just take a stroll around the non-descript shops and markets located around the seashore.
Those who can afford to extend their stay might want to organize a day trip to the Vilankulo Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary. This protected game reserve and national park is one of the largest among the parks in the Indian Ocean. It can be a good springboard to start an ecotourism tour, which in a way can contribute to the preservation of the local flora and fauna.
