Just off The Coast of the "Stone Town" of Zanzibar is the long segment of Pemba's mile-long shoreline which consists of dense forests sweeping down to the waters dotted with little islands which literally make it a paradise.
Pemba is hailed as the "Evergreen Isle of Mozambique," famed for its rolling greens of vegetation, leafy countryside and untapped underwater world teeming with schools of pelagic marine life such as coral fish, bottle nose, spinner dolphins, manta rays, and the biggie barracuda.
Miles beyond Pemba's coast are some of the world-class dive spots of Mozambique which include the Panza Wreck, Fundu Island Gap, Mesali and Njao Gap, all famed for their sheer coral walls which drop down to over 300 meters into the clear sapphire water. Snorkeling is another diversion in the area which can be done right off the lagoon, which is also abundant with colorful marine creatures.
Though the coastal town is still in its infancy in terms of tourism, Pemba's remoteness is one of the reasons why it is considered one of the most sought-after island escapes of travelers, especially to those who want to get away from the maddening hordes of tourists who throng the usual tourist paths and to those in need of some solitude and tranquility.
Just gazing dreamily at the dhows that make its way to the vastness of the sea brings comfort to the weary. The effect is heightened by the white sand and the sumptuous food which consists of freshly caught crabs, lobsters, prawns and tuna, grilled to perfection. At sundown, lovers can watch the burnt orange African sun which sets slowly over the lapping waves of the sea or just sip cocktails by the porch and marvel at the expanse of the almost deserted beaches of Wimbi, Mecúfi and Murrébuè.
Visitors who are planning to bring their small boat here might enjoy getting lost in the maze of its small channels and islets and get overwhelmed by the authentic local souks of Pemba which stretch for about two kilometers on the beach.
