The Glossary
Undoubtedly, Central Mozambique is one of Africa's caches of diverse and distinguished ecosystems from mountains to floodplains, embellished with the prominence of Gorongosa National Park. Once called the crowning glory of Portuguese Africa, Central Mozambique is reputedly the spot where Noah parked his ark and let his cargo loose. Several such legends and myths surround Central Mozambique and give it a special aura. However, during the long Mozambique civil war, soldiers and robbers killed quite a few of the animals and destroyed the infrastructure and even planted landmines in the emerald Eden, Gorongosa.
Visitors heading for a safari tour can still see a few waterbucks, a warthog, grey crowned cranes, white rhinos and sitatunga (swamp-dwelling antelopes) lurking in the park. Today, the Gorongosa National Park is undergoing a painstaking restoration with the help of an American millionaire who invested about $ 39 million for the park alone in the hope of restoring the balance of the ecosystem of the park that used to be the playground of a great collection of African wildlife.
Getting to Central Mozambique provides the chance to explore the sleepy town of Beira, the largest port city of Mozambique, famed for its colonial era buildings which were partly ruined during the civil war. Those visitors who decide to tread its winding streets are sure to get a feeling of the Afro-Portuguese days.
Visiting Chinde, a remote coastal town south of Zambezi River, will provide the opportunity to meander along the shabby huts of local Mozambicans where women may be found pounding sorghum in a huge mortar to make an ushwa (dish made from boiled cornmeal), a staple food of the locals.
Other points of interest include the city of Chimoio, close to the Zimbabwe border; the small city of Caia where the lowest vehicle crossing is built; and Mutarara where the longest railway bridge in Africa is nestled.
