After staying on the shadows for centuries, Taroudannt is now revealing itself to the world not only as a shopping destination, but also a as a more laidback diversion from the city rush of Fes and Rabat.
Nestled in the Souss Valley, Taroudannt is dubbed as the tiny version of Marrakesh. The city might seem landlocked at first due to its surrounding walls, which were built by Mohammed ash-Sheikh in 1528. The city was originally a market town that served as a Silk Road for traders coming all the way from the Sahara Desert and the Algerian border. The merchants then bartered goods such as spices, carpets, jewelry, and other high-standard handicrafts made by the locals.
At present, the town remains a center of trade but more bustling than before. The main squares are dotted with souks and stalls especially during Thursdays and Saturdays, when natives from Atlas come down to the city to trade their products.
The narrow streets of Taroudannt also contain landmarks such as the Salam, which was once an imperial palace now boasting of a sprawling manicured garden. There are also fortifications around the town, alongside with ruined gates and citadels.
The tannery at Aladin Treasure Shops and Museum exhibits leather goods made out of goat and camel hides. On the other hand, Assareg is chock-full with Berber markets, where visitors can haggle for good finds such as terracotta plates, wrought iron products, Moroccan pots called tagine, Arab rugs and golden ornaments.
