Tangier is an embodiment of wealth in almost all aspects. Its history is as rich as its topography, but its mix of culture and charisma is what captivates the hearts of visitors and artists such as the painter Matisse and the American writer Paul Bowles, who lived here for almost 25 years.
Almost all places in Morocco have been described in a positive tone, but Tangier is different. It is among the few sites in the country that lives up to its reputation as a haven of spies and smugglers. This, however, does not stop tourists, especially European holidaymakers, to travel around the town and even relish the calm of its Atlantic waters and beaches.
Those craving for a dose of old Tangier can start strolling around the Medina, the gateway to the Grand Socco. From here, visitors can enter the gold market at Rue as-Siaghin, then proceed to the Galerie Tindouf, a cluttered bazaar filled with antiques. The bazaar is amid Boutique Majid, a three-storey souk selling Moroccan carpets, jewelry, linen and caftans. Further south is the mellah or old Jewish quarter.
Another landmark is the Grande Mosque, the site of a former Roman temple built by the Portuguese along with the Kasbah located at the highest point of the town.
As compared to the old town, Ville Nouvelle or the New Town has a sleeker character for its manicured gardens and European shops and cafés lining the main square. The main square reveals a panorama of Old Mountain's lush hills, Tangier's concrete rooftops, and the yachts dotting the Strait of Gibraltar.
Asilah, a former bastion of the Portuguese transformed into a laidback resort, is where visitors can have fresh seafood and cool green mint tea. The place might appeal to backpackers for its harsh underground aura.
