As compared to Casablanca, Morocco's capital, Rabat, is more laidback although it dons the same European attitude and sophistication through its tree-lined avenues, striking buildings, and classy people.
Life seems slow in Rabat, so walking here could be leisurely especially because it is known for its cleanliness and handful of historic architecture. Among these is the 14th century Grand Mosque, which can be found alongside the souks of Souq as-Sebbat and the mountain Kasbah des Oudaias, which overlooks the Bou Regre River and the Atlantic Ocean. A more popular landmark is Le Tour Hassan, built by the city's 12th-century king, Almohad Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour.
Another structure that may be worth a visit is the Merenid necropolis of Chellah, the remnants of Sala Colonia, a former Roman city at the heart of Morocco. From here, visitors can spend some quiet time before heading to the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, noted for its Moroccan-style interiors and ornate zellij ceiling mosaic. After a series of long walks and side trips, travelers can head to the Andalusian Garden to have some hearty lunch under the shade of trees.
An interesting collection of Rabat's treasures ranging from simple Moroccan clothing to elaborate ceramics and jewelry can be seen in Musee des Oudai. More ancient remnants can be found in Archaeology Museum while the Museum of Science and Nature is focused on artifacts relating to the city's natural history.
A visit to Rabat might be incomplete without groping into the stalls of Walled Medina, famous for its carpets and native crafts. For beautiful ceramics, the must-visit is Salle des Bronzes. For leather slippers and copper crafts, the place to go to is the Flea Market near the mouth of Bou Regre.
