If not for its medina and mosques, the royal city of Meknès can be mistaken as a real French town due to its plethora of palaces, stables, gardens and gateways that have earned the town its moniker, "Versailles of Morocco." Although it is a smaller city as compared to Fes and Rabat, its sheer smallness delivers an unexpected delight to would-be visitors.
Today, a visit to the city opens a possibility of exploring a great deal of structures and monuments that trace back to the rich imperial past of Meknes. Among these is the sprawling courtyard of Place el Hedim, where local merchants and street sellers can be seen offering knick knacks to travelers.
Southeast of Place el Hedim is the portal to the Imperial City of Meknes, Bab Mansour, where tourists can walk around like royalty due to its grandiose gateways and winding passageways decorated with intricate Almohad black tiles and ornamental inscriptions.
A contrast to the black shade of Bam Mansour is the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, which houses a series of chambers and courts that are decked in brightly-painted tiles and spiraling stuccowork. The site holds the remains of the ruler Moulay Ismail and his whole clan, which is why the area is an important pilgrimage site among Muslims from around the world.
Other places of interest around the city include the Palace of Dar Jamaï, Koubbat as-Sufara', the Mausoleum of Sidi ben Aïssa, and Medersa Bou Inania, which showcases classic Moroccan decorative techniques like intricate olivewood ceilings and elegant wall plasters.
