The "holy" city of Fes may not be as popular as Marrakesh, but this medieval town of mixed Muslim and Christian houses is copious in historical, cultural and architectural wealth, which is why it is now found on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Nowadays, the city best serves as a playground of merchants and artisans that continuously engage visitors in a swirl of activity.
Fes' vast labyrinth of more than 9,000 tiny alleyways and streets filled with antiques, jewelry, colorful carpets and clothing might summon a visual overload. A line of food stalls in the cobblestone road of Medina, on the other hand, might tempt the palate. Shouts of hawkers and roaring vehicles also mix in unison at the shops tucked in the old walled city of Fes el Bali.
At the southern tip Fes is Fes el-Jdid, a 13th-century extension of Fes el Bali and a former Jewish quarter and home to the Dar el-Makhzen or Royal Palace. There is also the French section of Fes called Villa Nouvelle, the site of the city's modern commercial and business center that is dotted with hotels, boulevards, restaurants, cafés, bookshops, and medersas (theological universities).
As one of the most religious cities in Morocco, Fes exudes a strong Islamic presence through its many mosques and minarets such as the El-Makoudi, Ain Khaïl and Al-Oued Mosque, which can be found along with the synagogues of Ibn Danan and Em Habanim.
Aside from souks and shrines, there are tanneries that are concentrated in Adarga. Among these is Chouwara Tanneries, the city's largest. History and culture buffs might as well enjoy lingering around the museums of Fondouk el-Nejjarine and Dar Batha, where visitors may have a close-up examination of Moroccan arts and crafts, fine leatherwork, carpets, ceramics, and embroidery.
