Sitting on the slopes of Rif Mountains in northern Morocco is the "Blue City" of Chefchaouen, which epitomizes a quintessential Moroccan town with its quaint simple houses that have white walls and blue doors. Alongside these dwellings are well-preserved Kasbahs (fortresses), mosques, and hammams (Turkish baths).
Although the town is a virtually unknown tourist destination, it has been a favorite choice of hippie travelers and backpackers for years for a reason: cannabis is cheaper here than in Europe.
A good way to start a journey around Chefchaouen is by visiting the Medina (fortress), where visitors can navigate the winding cobblestone alleyways of Plaza Uta el Hammam, which is dotted with whitewashed blue-door houses, cafés, and hammams. A short stroll up will lead tourists to the Ruined Mosque that overlooks the whole town of Chefchaouen.
Another site worth a visit is the 15th-century Grande Mosque, renowned for is octagonal steeple that reaches out to the sky. A closer look at the mosque will reveal the intricate terracotta pattern of its roof.
Like Marrakesh, Chefchaouen is also packed with open-air markets or souks. The town is one of the best places to buy native Moroccan handbags and carpets, especially if one is on a budget.
