The principal city of Morocco, Casablanca is a haven that always welcomes the undying love that honeymooners exhale as time goes by. Forever immortalized by the movie classic that shares the same name, Casablanca is Morocco's modern metropolis. Having grown in the wink of an eye, from a small settlement to a growing and sprawling city of 3 million, Casablanca offers it's every visitor an equally rare and unique experience. Casablanca showcases a voluminous picture of its streets, hotels, office blocks and slum areas too. It reflects heritage rich in art deco architecture with North African elements that act as a tangible reminder of its French colonial past.
The centre of Casablanca is pretty impressive. It encompasses big and lively boulevards flanked by high and well kept buildings with a clean and efficient environment. The streets spread their arms like the blades of a fan from the Place De Nations Unies which is the focal point of downtown Casablanca and is also the point where modern town intersects the medina.
You can't give the old colonial centre a miss as it is refreshingly beautiful and enticing. The buildings are of a French version of Arabo-Andalucian architecture with white soft lines and plenty of details too. If you are a walker, then the area to explore is south of Avenue Des Forces Armees Royales which boasts of the largest of structures. If you are keen to understand and taste the real essence of the likes and dislikes of the local Moroccans, then you must visit the Marche Central of Casablanca which is a small town market but a high quality version of the traditional suuqs of Morocco. The market aims directly at the needs of the locals and provides vegetables, meat, all kinds of sea food and handicrafts too. Turtle soup is an all time favorite and easily available delicacy of Casablanca and a must have for those visiting Casablanca.
If you want to carry a memento back home, then Casablanca is one of the better paces in Morocco to pick up something unique and different. If you are soaked deep with the new and modern city of Casablanca, then the old city is definitely worth venturing. You should see the less visited quarters-the areas where the local people live and where the colors, shapes and curves bring you far away from the elegance of downtown Casablanca. And finally, the Mosque of Hassan which is a major landmark of Casablanca cannot be ignored. The exterior of the mosque is breathtaking and emerge as if you were zooming in on a fractal image.
