Though the center of Agadir is not very striking, the slim but long beaches (the Palm/ Sunset Beach) are the town's main draws, dotted with four and five star hotels and flocked by sun-seekers during the months of May to October who gather to enjoy the town's healthy climate. In the meantime the surfers head to the less developed Taghazoute to conquer the amazing waves and the solitude that it offers.
Tagged as the "Winter Sun" by the Northern European holiday makers, the resort town of Agadir, nestled on the shore of the Atlantic, and with the backdrop by the Atlas Mountain, is a city that came under the power of the Moroccan government in 1500. In 1960, the town was almost erased from the map of Morocco by an earthquake that buried the old city, killing thousands of its inhabitants. Though much of the old town was destroyed by the earthquake, the town has now flourished into a seaport and a seaside resort replete with its wide roads, large buildings and European-style cafés.
Visitors who choose to linger on the beach can enjoy all kinds of water sports like parasailing and wet-biking. Those who favor sightseeing can start the journey around the Earthquake Museum tucked in the southwest tip of Jardim de Olhão and go on to the Musée du Patrimoine Amazigh where they can find a collection of Berber relics which give invaluable insight into the life of the Berbers of the region.
Four kilometres south of Agadir, Coco Polizzi, an Italian architect born in Rabat, has created the La Médina d'Agadir, an idealised Berber village, built using traditional techniques and materials, with workshops for 30 independent artisans. A café-restaurant provides refreshments. Shuttle buses come out here from the kiosk on Agadir's Blvd du 20 Août, calling at several hotels on the way.
The Vallée des Oiseaux is a shaded children's playground, with an aviary and zoo, created in a dry riverbed which runs down from Blvd Hassan II south to Blvd du 20 Août. In town, there's a miniature zoo called the Valley of the Birds, or you can climb up to the kasbah (old citadel), on a hill to the north, for great views over the city.
For wonderful tajines, head to L'Étoile de Marrakech. There are stalls selling grilled fish by the port north of town, but you can also eat freshly landed fish in more comfort. Agadir also offers several pieces of handicraft goods. The best place to get them will be the fixed-price shops, which is the ideal choice if you don't know how to haggle well. But, remember, you may find that the cheap things you bought in Marrakech are not so cheap!
