The picturesque province of Zavkhan in northwestern Mongolia boasts of some of the most stunning scenery in the entire country. It is a unique place where the grassy steppes and snowy taigas of Siberia meet the arid deserts of Central Asia. The area is also where the legendary mountain Otgon Tenger Uul - a holy peak worshipped by the local populace - can be found. Numerous wildlife and nature parks containing a plethora of rare and endangered flora and fauna dot its landscape. It may largely be an unknown destination due to its wayward position on the map, but its sights are well worth the journey.
Zavkhan is a lovely attraction set in a breathtaking backdrop of towering snow-capped mountains, dense forests, clear lakes, sand dunes and hot springs. Its landscape allows for some spectacular hiking, horse-riding, camping, mountaineering and backpacking opportunities. Its peaks offer a panoramic view of the majestic sights below, and are clearly must-climbs. Tourists can also go to the provincial capital Uliastai, which is nestled in the middle of the mountains, and features a rich cultural and historical heritage evident in its olden monasteries and fine museums. Examples are the Dechindarjaa Monastery with its recognizable silver tin roof; the Museum of Famous People, which showcases the prominent figures of the province; and the History Museum, which displays religious arts, native artifacts and mammoth remains.
The main reason, however, that tourists trek to the land is the existence of its renowned wildlife parks. The most visited of these is the Khan Khukhii-Khyargas Nuur National Park, a sanctuary to Dalmation pelicans, grayling fishes offering great venues for swimming, horse-riding and bird-watching. The Otgontenger Uul Strictly Protected Area with its collection of snow leopards, argalis, red deer and Siberian ibexes is a popular stop as well. Its peaks provide perfect venues for hiking and mountain-climbing. And lastly, one can find the Tarvagatain Nuruu National Park, featuring pristine lakes and rivers that are ideal for swimming, diving and boating.
