The Glossary
The more than 250-year-old city of Uliastai located in western Mongolia is widely considered as one of the oldest settlements in the entire country. Also one of the country's most populated cities, it serves as the capital of the vast Zavkhan province. An important economic and transport hub, it is a preferred tourist stop of those heading to other destinations like the country capital Ulaanbaatar and neighboring giant Russia. With its picturesque landscape that is dominated by majestic pine-covered mountains, lush green forests, large valets and sand dunes, it is an attraction that makes tourists want to stay a little while longer so that they can enjoy and take in the wonderful sights.
Established by the Manchurian militaries of China in 1733, the city was meant as a strategic stronghold to be used in defense against the barbarian Mongol armies who roamed the mountains at the time. After the dynasty's fall in 1911, it was finally reclaimed by the local people who transformed it into the burgeoning industrial center of the whole province. Its long history of occupation has left indelible marks on the city, rendering Uliastai a rich cultural and historical heritage.
Its most visited attraction is the historic Manchu Fort ruins, highlighted by the remnants of towers, massive walls and the many prisons that once contained the shackles and torture devices employed at the time of Manchu occupation. The History Museum features artifacts that tell the city's story. One can also go and see the famous nine white stupas, which are sculptures of the nine saints of Buddhism. The landscape is dotted with numerous Buddhist temples, archaeological sites and adequate hotel accommodations for weary travelers looking to spend the night. However, it is probably more exciting to set up camp in traditional tents by the banks of its two great rivers.
