Dubbed as the "breadbasket of Mongolia," the aptly-named agricultural province of Selenge in northern Mongolia is nestled by a picturesque basin between the mighty Orkhon and Selenge Rivers. Its lovely scenery attracts the multitude of travelers making their way through the land in their journeys toward the country capital Ulaanbaatar or neighboring giant Russia. As such, it is a vital part of Mongolia's burgeoning tourist industry, and most importantly its rural economy.
What it is most famous for, however, is the incredible Amarbayasgalant Khiid Monastery (monastery of tranquil felicity) located at the foot of the Buren-Khaan peak near the Selenge River. Established in 1727, it is generally deemed as one of the three principal Buddhist institutions in the entire country, along with the Erdene Zuu and Gandan Monasteries. It was built as a tribute to the distinguished Buddhist sculptor Zanabazar, who actually had a hand in designing the beautiful complex. Featuring a Manchu-style architecture and influence, it contains more than 37 temples and sculptures that present a glorious feast for the eyes. Soviet communist invaders razed the monastery in 1937, destroying many of its structures that were eventually restored in 1988 by UNESCO and the Mongolian government.
Not to be outdone, Selenge's picturesque landscape makes travelers negotiating its roads and highways stop and take in the wonderful sights. It has a typical countryside ambiance, infused with beautiful nature like its majestic snow-capped mountains, dense pine forests, great rivers, clear lakes and lush fields. A vital part of the country's agriculture, it takes pride in its vast wheat fields, blossoming orchards and is particularly known as a berry-lover's paradise. One can find in the area a mouth-watering conglomerate of brambles, cowberries, bill berries, black currants and red currants. There is also a wide variety of wildlife roaming the landscape, like elks, musk deer, marmots, foxes, boars, wolves and sand grouses.
