Boasting of the majestic Lake Khovsgol, the second largest freshwater body on the whole in Asia, the Khovsgol Nuur National Park located in northwest Mongolia is recognized as one of the most beautiful spots in the country. Fondly called the country's "Blue Pearl," it features a spectacular landscape set against a backdrop of towering snow-capped mountains, rare wildlife and clear-blue waters - making it an extremely popular destination for adventurers, backpackers, naturalists and families looking for some quality vacation time together.
Estimated to date back more than two million years ago, Lake Khovsgol takes great pride in being one of the planet's 17 remaining and protected ancient lakes. It is virtually unspoiled and serves as the country's largest source of fresh and drinkable water. Local villagers consider it sacred, respectfully referring to it as their "mother". A natural biosphere, it is home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna. It is also a wonderful spot for fishing enthusiasts, containing numerous kinds of fishes like the sturgeon, lenok (trout) and the Arctic grayling, known as its most common yield. The surroundings feature a plethora of wildlife mostly made up of bears, ibexes, elks, sheep, Siberian moose, musk deer and wolverines.
One of the country's burgeoning tourist destinations, the national park is where the snowy Siberian taiga meets the grassy steppes of Central Asia. Its picturesque scenery, combined with rocky mountains, overlooking plateaus, dense pine forests and lush meadows make it the perfect place for hiking, camping and mountaineering adventures. It is at its best when explored and traversed on foot, to better take in the breathtaking sights. Close by lays Khatgal a quaint village near the lake hosting a camp side known for its traditional yurts (nomad tent).
