Kharkhiraa Uul and Turgen Uul Travel Guide
Located in the Kharkhiraa Valley of Central Asia, the majestic peaks of Kharkhiraa Uul and Turgen Uul tower over the landscape of Mongolia. Adventurers, hikers, campers and backpackers are heeding the call of the mountains, which serve as sanctuary for a diverse wildlife and flora and fauna and constitute a chunk of the country's burgeoning tourist industry. They stand as two of the last great unknowns at the edge of the world.
With their forbidding typography and spectacular views, the twin peaks provide excellent venues for mountaineering, hiking and camping opportunities. They have a certain primitive appeal and ambiance that offer a chance for peace in mountain seclusion. The trails feature a stunning sight of massive glaciers, grassy steppes, clear-blue lakes, winding rivers and rare fauna like ibexes, wolves, musk deer, Siberian moose, and snow leopards. It is also possible to encounter the mysterious nomadic tribe commonly known as the Khoton. They are renowned for their enduring shamanism traditions and beliefs, including their unique yurt (nomad tent) villages.
The mountains are also conveniently situated near another spectacular sight that is often the subject of pure amazement. A short distance away lays the famous Uvs Nuur (Lake Uvs), a saline body of water reputed as the country's largest lake by surface area. A remnant of a vast sea that existed thousands of years ago, it is a UNESCO-protected site that is home to more than 29 different fish species (the main source of food for the local populace) and also serves as a hotspot for fishing enthusiasts.
