Darkhad Depression in northern Mongolia, a glacial lake during pre-historic times, broods as a remote, mystical place that alternates between prairies, forests, its 300 or so lakes and where locals continue to practice their shamanistic traditions. It is a place that time forgot: people continue to live as nomads and rely on nature for survival, entrusting their lives to simple magic—the very reason why travelers can't resist its magnetism. Framed by a backdrop of towering snow-capped mountains, it is a great destination for hardcore adventurers, naturalists and fishing enthusiasts.
Located in the western Siberian taiga, it is only a short distance away from the borders of neighboring giant Russia. It is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, especially sheep, deer, elks, goats and cows on which the mostly nomadic population depend on for food, clothing and trade. The inhabitants of the area are mostly Tsaatan, or literally, the Reindeer People. They are unique and often very mysterious, appropriating a lifestyle of "breeding reindeer and sleeping in huts," and are most renowned for their shamanist beliefs and traditions.
However, what the area is usually associated with is its reputation as a fisherman's paradise. With its rich reserves of aquatic life, it is a popular spot for fly-fishing, fishing expeditions and competitions. It is famous for the incredible hucho taimen - an amazing game fish that can grow to lengths of two meters, and is reputed to be the largest species of salmon on the entire planet. White carps, lenoks (trout), salmon, Siberian white fishes and Arctic graylings also call Darkhad Depression as home.
