Boasting of the highest mountain in Mongolia, the Khuiten Peak (Friendship Peak), the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in the Bayan Olgii Region is a vast natural reserve that stretches for 6,000 square kilometers, touching Chinese and Russian borders. Featuring a breathtakingly diverse landscape dominated by towering snow-capped massifs, lush alpine forests, grassy steppes and desert valleys, it is a perfect destination for hiking, mountaineering, horse-riding, backpacking and appreciating nature. A largely unknown frontier, it is an off-the-beaten-path attraction that is definitely worth the visit.
The park is also the location of the picturesque lakes of Khoton Nuur, Khurgan Nuur and Dayan Nuur. Clear-blue and vast, they provide spectacular opportunities for activities like diving, boating and rafting. In addition, they contain a large variety of fishes, making it an excellent draw for fishing enthusiasts. The area also features some of the biggest glaciers to be found in the country - the Potanini, Alexander and Graney Glaciers - which offer an amazing sight for the eyes to behold. It is also rich in cultural heritage and takes great pride in its numerous ancient architecture, beautiful artifacts and remarkable burial sites scattered throughout the region.
A natural biosphere, it is home to many rare and endangered species of wildlife fauna. It is not uncommon to stumble upon such animals like beech martens, ibexes, Siberian moose, Argali sheep, golden eagles, red deer and snow cocks coexisting harmoniously without any fear of imminent outside threats. An endearing attraction of the park is the prospect of tourists having to mingle and interact with the native villagers of the area. With its absence of restaurants, hotels and dining facilities, it is usually imperative for the visitors to go and eat with the locals. Their cuisine is generally nomadic in origin, and is very meat-centric, incorporating few vegetables. A prime example of these delicacies is the traditional boodog (marmot barbeque) - which is mutton stuffed inside a marmot's abdominal cavity then cooked using hot stones. They would usually offer their national drink, airag - mare's milk that is fermented, and of course lots and lots of vodka.
