Situated in the north-west of Pohnpei state, Palikir, the capital of Micronesia, is a city that has no addresses. Street names are not used to give directions, but there is only one main road and when travelers get lost, know-it-all locals are happy to lend a guiding hand. A modern labyrinth. Palikir cannot boast of many attractive sights. Its only crowning glory is the break called Palikir Pass, a hub for world-class surfing from November to April. Nonetheless, the mountainous city is a springboard for delving into the nearby goodies of Pohnpei such as the ruins of the thousand-year-old royal city of Nan Madol, the hiking trail, World War II Japanese guns of Sokehs rock, and the Spanish Wall which house the remains of an old Spanish fort at the former capital, Kolonia. There is a small airport that connects Palikir with the world outside by air, but intrepid travelers would rather arrive here on their sailboats since Pohnpei has panoramic lagoons and beaches surrounded with a belt of mangrove swamps. An adrenaline feast involving diving, snorkeling, and kayaking awaits tourists outside of Palikir. There are also cabins on the beaches to stay in, as well as barbecue pits to cook food with, although Palikir and its environs are known for fresh garden salads and Japanese food, which is a reminder of the city's former colonizers. The older population speak fluent Japanese, but the majority's colloquial tongue is loyal to both Pohnpeian and English.Palikir is one of the world's rainiest cities, yet this does not discourage tourists and adventurers, who even find the weather a relief against the lashes of tropical heat.
