Literally means "a place to stop," Pulau Perhentian does convince tourists to in stay in this island for a week or two. Its two islands of Besar and Kecil promise to stun visitors with a vista of the palm-fringed beaches and challenge intrepid divers and snorkeler to explore the cove bays of Tokong Laut (Temple of the Sea) and Sugar Wreck and marvel at the mottled corals and thousands of tropical fish swimming gaily in the depths of the emerald sea.
Long been a "silk road" for traders coming from Thailand, Pulao Perhentian has served as a fisherman's hamlet for centuries. The advent of modernization however, has swept the bucolic mode of the island, transforming Pulao Perhentian into a haven of resorts, chalets and improved longhouses.
Visitors can entertain themselves with sports like swimming, deep sea fishing, wind surfing and canoeing. Just off the edge of the Pulao Perhentian is the Pulao Redang Marine Park that houses a rich dipterocarpus forests and abundant fauna such as monitor lizards, geckos and a number of mammals along with 50 species of birds. Pulao Redang can be a good jump-off point for jungles treks to the nearby island in the East Coast.
For those who are not into strenuous activities, sunbathing or lounging in the cabin (with a cocktail on hand) can be an option while watching the sea kiss the endless shoreline.
