Island of spices and sauces
Malaysia's only non-Muslim state, Penang, is a burgeoning coastal town considered as the new KL (Kuala Lumpur). In this culinary hotspot, the savory flavors of Malaysia tease the palate with spices and sauces.
Hailed as the "Island of Betel Nuts," Pulao Penang is proud of its colonial past, jovial festivities and rich array of local delicacies. Since the British colonial times, numerous nationalities have migrated to Penang and discovered its assorted cultural mix. This is the reason why unique food choices rooted in India, China, Thailand, and Indonesia abound in the island. Among the several food festivals, Thaipusam Vegetarian Festival is the most popular, similar to Phuket's vegetarian fair.
The beach life
Though small in size, Penang is probably one of the most famous Malaysian tourist destinations. Over the centuries, Pulao Penang has grown into a beachcomber's paradise with its amenities needed for all sorts of water sport activities. Visitors who crave for a little "solitude" can explore the coast from a distance or move to Jerejak Island or Langkawi for some outdoor activities such as mountain biking, trekking and scuba diving.
Nature and architecture
Around the town, the different cultures are exemplified by the styles of the houses and temples such as the Chinese Kek Lok Si Temple and the Snake Temple, which houses Burmese python at the very altar. For the best view of Penang skyline, its bridge, Penang Bridge, and the nearby Georgetown is where visitors can take a cable train service up to the Penang Hill. Before heading to the trail, travelers are advised to drop by at the Penang Botanical Garden to check out the spice and butterfly garden.
Visitors can also go shopping at the flea market of Lorong Kulit, or head to the tamu (night market) along Batu Ferringhi for plenty of local finds like colorful dresses, handicrafts, books and exotic items from India and China. It is often said that a visit to Pulao Penang is not complete without trying the Penang laksa, a popular Malaysian dish.
