The Glossary
‘Adventure' in Ifaty is defined as diving with the sharks, and even hand-feeding them; surfing in its blue-green, gem-like waters, or a horseback ride across a forest of spiky ‘octopus' trees that seem like a scene that just walked out of a dream. Whatever kind of thrill the tourist may mention, Ifaty might just be the one to fulfill that fantasy.
A resort town in Toliara Province, Ifaty is a renowned honeymoon getaway for its solitary, laid-back spot on the west coast of Southern Madagascar. Along the beaches are coconut palms and bungalow villages willingly shared to tourists by the Malagasy (locals). The humble accommodations have basic facilities and services, including a relaxing massage on the beach, but their best amenity is a window overlooking the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, a haven for snorkeling, kayaking, and whale-watching especially from July to August, when the whales are migrating from the Mozambique Channel.
Just a short walk inland is a dry desert leading to sparsely scrubbed mountains, salt flats wafting with sulfur odor, and the Reniala Nature Reserve, east of the beach, an otherworldly spiny forest of generations-old baobab trees with twisted branches and bottle-shape bodies. The trees rise above tangerine shrubs and orange soil. Over the trees, tropical birds fly to delight bird-watchers, while on the ground are mating geckos, three-eyed lizards and other exotic sightings.
For wreck divers and snorkelers, Tôlanaro or Fort Dauphin is just a boat-ride away to see centuries-old shipwrecks of pirates and merchants.
