Declared as the European Capital of Culture in 2009, Vilnius is a city that is steeped in history. As the capital of Lithuania, it is a political, industrial, cultural, and tourism powerhouse that exudes both charm and soul. Its claim to fame is its rich cultural heritage and many historical landmarks that are bequeathed to it by an extensive history. This makes the town a popular tourist destination in the country, as attested by the nearly one million visitors it receives every year.
A highlight of a visit to Vilnius is its famed Old Town section, considered to be one of the largest in Eastern Europe and Middle Europe. Made up of ancient buildings dating back between the 13th and the 19th centuries, its immense historical value made UNESCO declare it as a World Heritage Site in 1994. The area is chock-full in majestic churches, sprawling squares, monasteries, and synagogues that make it an archaeologist's delight.
One can also find in the town the impressive Archcathedral Basilica, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Vilnius. Originally built from wood in 1251, it underwent numerous makeovers throughout the course of its history. At around 1387, it was remodeled into a Gothic-style cathedral, while its Chapel of St. Casimir was added between 1623 and 1636. The cathedral features a Baroque style of architecture. Its most distinctive feature, though, is its famed bell tower that is 57 meters high and was built in 1801. Inside the church, one can find a display of various artworks believed to date back to the 16th century.
Another church, St. Anne's Church, is one of the main reasons why the Old Town district became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located at the banks of Vilnia River, the church has an architecture that fuses Flamboyant Gothic and Brick Gothic styles. Legend has it that when Napoleon saw the church, he remarked that he wanted to take it home to France on the palm of his hand.
