Washed by the shores of the Baltic Sea, the bustling Palanga serves as the most popular summer resort town in Lithuania, including probably the rest of the Baltic States. Tens of thousands of revelers descend on its shores every year. Most visitors are enticed by its idyllic stretches of beaches, rolling sand dunes, and festive atmosphere. It is almost hard to believe for some, though, that this partying capital was once just a lazy string of seaside fishing villages known more for its amber industry rather than for its attractions.
Today, a majority of tourists come to Palanga in order to experience the pleasures being offered by its beaches. Backed by turquoise waters and sweet-smelling pine trees, Palanga Beach's sandy coast stretches to up to 18 kilometers long, with a width reaching up to 300 meters, making it a paradise for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. During the peak summer season, however, the sea is bound to yield huge and noisy crowds, which may not be the cup of tea of those seeking a peaceful vacation. All is not lost, though, as one probably can find a relatively secluded spot a little further away from the Palanga River, where most of the tourists converge.
Another worthy attraction in Palanga is the Palanga Botanical Park, which is considered to be among the best preserved and most well-maintained parks in Lithuania. Founded by Count Feliksas Tiskevicius in 1897, it sprawls to roughly 100 hectares in area. It is home to more than 500 diverse species of trees and bushes and also to a varied topography dominated by forests and fields, with a sprinkling of meadows and flower patches. Travelers may see in its heart a palace with a moat made out of rose beds.
One can also head to the famed Palanga Amber Museum, which is situated near the coasts of the Baltic Sea. Once the 19th century Palace of Count Feliksas Tiskevicius built by the German architect Franz Schwechten, it is today a reminder of the town's ancient amber industry. Visitors may see its collection of an estimated 28,000 amber artifacts, of which more than half feature an insect or a plant inside. The museum also has an exhibit of 4,500 pieces of jewelry and artwork fashioned out of amber. Among the most prized of the jewelry is the 3.5-kilogram "Amber Sun," deemed to be one of the largest amber pieces in Europe.
