Strong water currents, fantastic cascades, and lush islands constitute the vivid picture of Si Phan Don Province. Found in the extreme south of Laos, Si Phan Don (which literally means 4,000 islands) wows tourists with its quintessential feature: the largest cataract in Southeast Asia. The commanding Khon Phapheng Falls never fails to bring out the daredevil in tourists as they ride long, slender boats navigating and tumbling in the white waters.
Si Phan Don's many islands are relatively close to each other, making island-hopping an ideal activity. Numerous as they may be, only few are open to tourism. Arguably the most visited and accessible is the "big brother" of the archipelago Don Khong, where most guesthouses and settlements are located, such as the Muang Khong that takes pride on its morning market. A good time to visit is in early December, when the carnival-like Bun Suang Neua (a boat-racing festival) takes center stage.
Island-hopping from Don Khong is easier through Muang Sing, where boat tours explore the mini-archipelago. By the beach, trigger-happy photographers can find exquisite subjects, from fishermen hauling the day's catch to the mighty waves pouncing on rocks. Tourists also escape to neighboring Don Det and Don Khon to the south. The panoramic views from the coasts are stunning, and one may perchance see the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins coming up the surface. The islands' lush greenery makes them ideal for nature-trekking or simply leisurely walking. Covert treasures dot these forests, such as forgotten wats (temples) and baffling caves.
