Phonsavan is an understated town offering respite and a few pastimes to wandering tourist in this part of Northern Laos. Most of them flock to the nearby Plain of Jars that never fails to piqué visitors' imagination-an archaeological site consisting of clusters of gigantic jars believed to have been funerary urns. Travelers are advised to seek out a guide or follow the trail in exploring the place since it is still riddled with landmines.
Xieng Khuang's provincial capital is relatively modern, compared to other Lao cities, with a busy street lined with lodging, food, and shopping options. It is evident that the town pays much value to the historically-significant events that it has witnessed. Proof of this are the war memorials such as the Lao War Memorial (which also features a great view of the town), Vietnamese War Memorial (a faux stupa containing the war victims' remains), and the Muang Khan cemetery (a collection of Christian, Thai, and Lao tombs).
