The Glossary
The quaint town of Muang Sing is Laos' vibrant and rich cultural portrait. Locals in their traditional garments live the rustic life, farming and caring for livestock and poultry. That lifestyle is a great contrast to what is offered elsewhere. Serving as a counterpoint to the traditional lifestyle is the contemporary and foreign-influenced architecture around town, such as the French Garrison, formerly used as a Lao soldiers' outpost.
Muang Sing is known for its large bustling morning markets, where people from different backgrounds regularly meet and naturally know of each other's cultures. Scenic backgrounds are plenty, offering photo-opportunities.
Another way to learn of the indigenous cultures that calls Muang Sing home is through the Muang Sing Exhibitions Museum, where native artifacts and utensils, along with numerous religious images are displayed for curious travelers. The wats (temples) found in the town also reflect the cultural traditions of the native tribes that form the populace. An example of this is the Xieng Jai, which displays the influence the Thai Lü had on the architecture.
