Nestled along the snakelike Mekong shores is Huay Xai, Laos' last frontier to the West. Most tourists come to Bokeo's provincial capital as it is a launch pad to many other destinations in Laos or even in Thailand (located on the other side of the river). Huay Xai, however, is a destination in its own right, boasting of dramatic panoramas, graceful ferries, buzzing establishments.
The main street Saykhong is a good place to start wandering around Huay Xai, as it has a strip of guesthouses and shops that forks and leads to the other town attractions. The riverside wats (temples) such as Jom Khao Manilat and the Konekeo Xaiyaram feature not only impressive murals and architecture, but also a fantastic view of the Mekong. Before returning to the guesthouse, tourists can treat themselves to souvenirs and local products available in the main market Talat Sao.
