Hua Phan Province provides a pristine view of Laos: untouched mountains, virgin forests, and the locals' well-preserved cultures. The whole region is cradled by jagged landscape, making it difficult to reach. Those who brave the bumpy rides and rather cruel walkways are duly rewarded as the settlements in the area immediately evoke the feeling of belonging.
Located in the northern region of the country, Hua Phan gives tourists a taste of the country life. The Province rubs elbows with Vietnam which has exerted tremendous influence on the locals in their way of life. Most tourists come from Hanoi, as the roads leading to Hua Phan are less challenging from there.
The natural wonders are only few of the reasons why backpackers come to Hua Phan. The prime lure of the county is the Vieng Xai Caves, found near The East Laotian borders. Vieng Xai features a network of caverns the revolutionary group Pathet Lao (PL) used as their stronghold. What is interesting in these caves is the PL's effective use of the natural structure, and the sense of opulence found in some of the rooms. Members of high position in the group had their own caves, which they designed as they would their houses, complete with sleeping quarters, meeting rooms, and armory. Today, some of these caves are open for tourists.
A visit to Sam Neua, west of Vieng Xai, completes the Hua Phan Province experience. The city is known for the high-quality textile and a diverse range of cultural offerings, some uniquely Laotian-Vietnamese. Religious sites flourish in and around Sam Neua, such as the Ban Tham Buddha Cave (where a wide collection of Buddha images are found), the Nam Sam National Protected Area (home to numerous species of animals endemic to the mountains), and the Hintang Archaeological Park (famous for the enigmatic Sao Hin Tang or standing stone pillars, often compared to England's Stonehenge).
