The French colonial structures and the temples in Champasak may be crumbling, but they still exude an air of majesty and pride. The former royal capital of an independent kingdom-state draws people with the nostalgia for a lost world. The town is an ideal place to start before wandering through the southern Laos, as it features the basic amenities such as accommodation, shops, and even a bank. The nearby wats (temples) display impressive architecture and design that has unmistakable French and Indian influences, chief of which is the Wat Muang Kang. It is also a good launch pad for several tourist attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wat Phou and the nearby islands of Si Phan Don.
