Bokeo Province Travel Guide
From the port cities that trade across the canal to the tribal villages that use the waters for livelihood, the snaking Mekong River gives life to the modest Bokeo Province. Located in Northern Laos, the lush, mountainous county serves as a springboard to Luang Nam Tha and Udomxai, both found east. Bokeo also rubs elbows with Myanmar and Thailand. Hence, it is no surprise to find expatriate in the towns, especially in the provincial capital Huay Xai. The small villages feature minor archaeological and cultural treasures.
Bokeo may be one of the least populated provinces in the country. However, it boasts of having more than 30 different tribes, some of pure Lao decent whereas some have been mixed with Burmese or Thai influences. These influences have contributed to the richness and color of the local culture. Their crafts, language, and even the people all exude the lasting signs of these influences.
