Central Kenya, situated north of Nairobi, straddles the towns of Nyeri and Thika, offering refreshing hill walks through its bird-rich areas or an arduous but rewarding hike to its montage forests. Endowed with a dramatic view of the rolling hills carpeted with all sorts of cultivated vegetation, it is found at the backdrop of Mt. Kenya whose slopes and alpine summit are sure to challenge the seasoned hiker. The mountain is also known to be a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.
The fertile soil of the region nourishes a large variety of crops such as tea, coffee, maize and even mangoes. But what catches the attention of the visitors first will probably be the Mount Kenya National Reserve, home of the Kikuyu tribe who believe in a supreme god Ngai, and the sanctuary of a variety of wld animals like elephants, lions, buffalos, leopards, antelopes and the rare bongos.
Visitors can also visit the Abadere National Park, a classic hodgepodge of moorlands, peaks and evergreen forests of the Kinangop Plateau and Salient. The area is also rich in wildlife ranging from bush pig, rhino, warthog, giant forest hog and the reedbuck to an astounding collection of birdlife. The highest point of Abadere range is the Ol Doinyo Satima or the "Mountain of the Young Bull in Maa" which towers around 3998 meters, a real challenge even to tough mountaineers.
After the strenuous hike, visitors can rest either at Nanyuki, a popular base for people climbing Mt. Kenya, or at the Kiamaina Farm which lies at the slopes of Mt. Kenya. From here visitors can observe the traditional organic farming practiced by the local farmers. For a refreshing bath, there is the Thomson Falls at the foot of Aberdare, a haven of the rare Colubus monkey and some playful baboons.
In the town, a place that shouldn't be ignored is the Karatina Market, one of the largest open air markets in Africa. Apart from the usual utensils and clothing, the jua kali shops also sell native pots, tools, etc. Spare time can be spent on fishing trip on the River Likii or checking out the town's cultural center.
