The Glossary
Without a doubt, the region of Southern Jordan or Petra and the South hold some of the most beautiful scenery in Jordan, especially when the dramatic deserts of Wadi Rum create a spellbinding mirage from afar as the rose red city of Petra appears in the line of vision. But the area, of course, is famous for the Treasury of Petra, a historical and archeological hewn landmark from the rose-colored side of a cliff. It is the iconic symbol of the kingdom and an important World Heritage site.
Starting point
Visitors getting to the area can start their stroll along the walls of the Siq which contain block gods and Nabatean inscriptions of various kinds. From here, they can continue walking all the way to the Treasury also known as Al-Khazneh, which served as the capital city of Nabateans way back to 6th century BC. The Royal Tombs and Temple of the Winged Lions along with the Arches next to the South Temple may not be as spectacular as the Pyramids of Giza and Khufu but they are all worth seeing nonetheless.
Those who want to engage to some serious hike can brave the steps of the Monastery which is hanging on the mountain top and just as grand as the Siq and the Treasury. Like the Monastery, the High Place of Sacrifice will sure to offer respite to the hikers upon reaching the summit where they can have a great view of the Nabatean processional aside from the pocket gardens and tombs.
Not just the Treasury in Petra
Another draw of Petra and the South is the resort town of Aqaba, a well-liked stop before visitors jump off to the fabled landscape of Egypt. Here, they can visit several landmarks which include the 13th century Aqaba Castle (famed for its unusual length), the Aqaba Museum (once the home of Sheriff Hussein bin Ali, the great-great grandfather of the present king Abdullah II). The area also features a handful of hammams (Turkish bath) which invite visitors for some full body massage and steam bath.
