The Glossary
The town of Karak, sometimes called Kerak, was the ancient capital of Moab located between Amman and Petra on the panoramic vista of the King’s Highway. The prominent Crusaders Castle of this town will help visitors understand why the fates of its rulers and Jordan itself managed to thrive here for centuries.
Legendary castle
Positioned within the walls of the old city, this fortified castle seems to dominate the whole town which was once a place of legend in battles between the Crusaders and the Islamic armies of Saladin. Today, the castle is an evocative remnant from the past, dominating the skyline of the city which overlooks the Dead Sea with the backdrop of the Karak suburbs.
Several architectural landmarks evoke Karak as a quintessential example of a Crusader’s military brilliance that is to say, chief of which is the understated elegance of the castle. Its preserved halls and passageways lead visitors to a labyrinth of sights which has served s movie sets for Hollywood films. While the fortifications have been damaged overtime by war and natural catastrophes, the old town and the castle remain steadfast in the face of modernity.
Wowing event ancient travelers
The Karak castle impressed a whole lot of outside observers, starting from the royalties of the medieval period along with Arab and European travelers. It also made an appearance in the chronicles of the famous traveler Ibn Battuta when he journeyed from Damascus to the Darb Al-Malik (King’s Highway).
While the “Castle of the Raven” still enjoys the view of what Ibn Battuta beheld, experts still do not know the reason why it came to be called as such. Up to this day, the puzzle remains. This is certain though: under the Ayyubids and early Mameluk sultans, the castle served as their defense and its subterranean passages are still visible up to this day.
Visitors who are planning to check out the castle should observe one cardinal rule, that is, to bring a flashlight or any form of light source for interior tunnels and passages are not lit.
