The Glossary
The town of Irbid, known in the ancient times as Arabella, was nicknamed “Arus as Shammal” which means the “Bride of the North” due to its outstanding beauty. Located north of Amman on the northern ridge of the Gilead, Irbid is halfway to the site of the Battle of Yarmouk, the battle waged by the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic Caliphate which is dubbed as the most significant battle in the military history of Jordan.
Transport hub
Today, the town serves as a major transportation hub between Syria and Mafraq and is home to the famous Jordan University of Science and Technology, a Yarmouk university which adds to the youthful vibe of the town due to the teeming number of foreign students coming to Irbid to study.
There is not much to see in downtown Irbid apart from the Bronze Age artifacts and graves speckled around the town of Qaiss Al HImma, Al Himma, Jerash Aljun and Pella.
Not just a university town
The wide thoroughfare of the University Street is a hodgepodge of small shops, boutiques and restaurants, offering all sorts of local goods and products. Interestingly, Irbid is one among the few Middle Eastern towns which boast plenty of Internet cafés, earning an entry to the Guinness Book of World Records.
The auspicious location of Irbid also helps visitors for an easy access to the fabled Jordan Valley where they can get the chance to see an Islamic castle wedged on the top of a hill along with the Roman Sites of Jerash and the superb pottery of Pella. Other important sights to see when in the town include the town’s museum, the Museum of Jordanian Heritage and the Natural History Museum which exhibits of Jordanian flora and fauna.
Irbid’s history prominently features its wine industry which earned for it the reputation as one of the top producers of some of the best wines in the old world. Right after Islam was introduce to the town, Irbid moved to olive oil production.
