The Glossary
Beyond the mountains and rolling hills of Jordan lies the Dead Sea, also known in Arabic as “Yam Ha-Melah” (Sea of Salt), the lowest saltwater lake on Earth. Located between the Jordan Rift Valley and the West Bank of Israel, the Dead Sea has a high concentration of salt that will allow swimmers to float literally like feather.
Crowd drawer
For over a century, the Dead Sea has attracted visitors not only from the Mediterranean but around the world. The site is mentioned several times in the Holy Scripture as a sanctuary of King David during the ancient times. The Dead Sea also served as one of the world’s first health resorts for King Herod and supplied balm salt and minerals for Egyptian mummification and concoction of cosmetic and herbal scents.
Despite the arid landscape, the town where it is located has flourished as a major tourist destination. Its appeal has increased when scrolls containing the lost books of Judaism and Christianity were found in the area and named the “Dead Sea Scrolls.”
Well-known natural spa
Today, Dead Sea has morphed into a strip of fortress-size spas with grand infinity pools. The surfacing of resorts brings in a mass of visitors and spa-goers who in search of the “elixir of youth.” Some skin doctors have claimed that minerals of the lake have curative properties against several skin diseases; mostly Americans and Europeans flock to the area to test its efficacy.
Visitors who get the opportunity to visit the town center will be rewarded with the site of Dead Sea palm groves that line the picnicking grounds around the coast, usually filled with Jordanian holiday-makers snacking on bowls of hummus and falafel.
