The Glossary
Crammed into a slim spit of land between the purple-tinted mountain and the sea of Aqaba is the aquatic playground of the Jordanians: the city of Aqaba. Its greatest asset is the Red Sea where visitors can experience some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities in the world.
Communing with the Red Sea
Overtime, the balmy weather and gentle water currents have created a favorable environment for the growth of corals and teeming marine life. Common species are montipora and the rare archelia along with the friendly sea turtles, dolphins and schools of multicolored fish. Night dives are popular in the area where the truly adventurous can get the chance to see the nocturnal sea creatures like lobsters, shrimps and crabs as they hunt for food. Visitors can also ride glass bottom boats to have a glimpse of the Red Sea’s diverse marine life.
Historical fact-check
Those who fancy learning a bit of history should take time off from the sun and head to Aqaba’s archeological sites such as the Tel Al-Kahlifeh. It is here where King Solomon reputedly built a fleet that sailed all the way to Somali and returned with cargoes of gold. Archeologist found some significant indications that the site served as Aqaba’s last stop for caravans and a commercial and industrial center for smelting copper as far as the 8th century B.C.
Economic center
For centuries, Aqaba has played an important role in the economy of the region. It has boasted a prime land and sea route connections to and from Asia to Europe up to this day. Due to its significant function, a couple of historic sites mark the city, including the 3rd century unnamed church believed to be older than the Church of Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Another famous landmark worth visiting is the Mameluk Fort, originally a Crusader’s Castle built in the 16th century.
Aqaba is the sum of all the good things Jordan has to offer, including an interesting history with some of the outstanding sites, activities, and people who are welcoming of visitors who want to find out the treasures the city has to offer.
