With a surprising mix of old and new the capital city of Amman, Jordan is nestled between the harsh desert and the fertile Jordan Valley. Built on a series of hills Amman yields amazing views at every turn and features a combination of new ultra-modern and old stone buildings. The heart of the city is bustling with activity and has plenty of hotels, restaurants, art galleries and museums to accommodate and entertain visitors. However, regardless of where you are in Amman evidence of the cities ancient roots are apparent. From the uniform residential suburbs to the traditional downtown area the amazing city of Amman never fails to impress and entertain travelers from all walks of life.
Exploring the city is an activity in itself when visiting Amman with its unique architecture, abundance of cultural offerings and friendly people. Visitors enjoy exploring Amman either by guided tour or on their own using the city's mass transit system. Notable places to visit in Amman would include the Roman Theater, the Balad or Downtown area, the Jordan Archeological Museum and the bustling Wakalat shopping district. Many visitors also enjoy a stroll through King Hussein Park or a trip to the old-downtown area known as the Souq. The Souq is the ideal place to really soak up the local culture and pick up some truly authentic souvenirs.
Considering that Amman is one of the oldest and most regularly inhabited cities it is of no surprise that it bears great religious significance to many faiths. There are many biblical references to the city and much of this religious history can still be seen in Amman. Many visitors enjoy a trip to the Citadel, a building that towers over the city from Jabal al-Qaia'a. The excavations at this site have yielded remains from Romans, Byzantines and the early Islamics. From the ancient Islamic palace of Qasr to the remains of the Byzantine basilica Amman is steeped in religious significance.
The city of Amman does not fall short in the adventure department either. With opportunities for every sport imaginable form golf to skydiving. Many visitors to Amman enjoy the abundance of opportunities for hiking, extreme sports and horseback riding the city has to offer. Plus, the city has a number of health clubs, water activities and parks for outdoor enjoyment. Additionally, the nightlife in Amman is an adventure in itself with live entertainment, Arabic music, theaters, concerts and dozens of international restaurants.
