Day trippers will sure to love hitting two destinations with one stone in the course of a day with Aljun en-route to Jerash, provided the alarm clock is set off early. Located in the hilly town of north Jordan and the north-west of Amman is the town of Aljun, dubbed as the “Jewel of Jordan.” It used to be a small humble settlement of the Rabadi and Haddad tribes famed for housing the Great Aljun Castle constructed in 12th century by the nephew of King Saladin to ward-off possible incursions.
A land of impressive structures
Perched atop of a hill, the Aljun Castle (Qala'at ar-Rabad) is the main draw of the town. Trekking the summit will bring visitors the expansive view of Golan Heights and Syria. Today, the castle is still standing handsomely amid the newly constructed buildings and watchtowers, courtesy of Mamluk who built defensive networks and subsequently expanded the area over time. Aside from the castle, the town takes pride with the Great Aljun Mosque, one of the oldest archeological spectacles in Jordan whose beauty was revealed to the world in 2007.
Countryside beauty
Getting to the countryside will bring visitors to rolling fields of pine forests and olive groves, popular venues for afternoon picnics and hiking. From here, they can have a quick visit to Tell Mar Elias just outside the city limits to see the impressive Byzantine Mosaics or the Aljun Forest Reserve which is also nearby.
Aside from the pastoral countryside, there are also interesting towns and villages tucked near Aljun that merit a visit. They are: Ain Janna, Kufrani, Anjara Sakhra, Hashmiyya and Ibbeen. Outside the castle, visitors can enjoy the cardamom-infuse Arabic coffee, freshly brewed beverages popular in the town.
