Whether on a bicycle or on foot, tourists roaming Onomichi may immediately imbibe this small coastal town's allure exuded by the plethora of Shinto shrines and narrow alleys lined with large stone lanterns, family-run shops, and ryokan (inns). Nestled among the verdant hills and the inland sea of eastern Hiroshima, this quaint settlement's relaxed environment and sweet-smiling locals may make visitors feel closer to home.
Onomichi's highlight is the Temple Walk, a paved, two-and-a-half-kilometer walkway that strings 25 of the town's local temples. While they may seem dull in comparison to Kyoto's offerings, the temples are still good examples of understated pieces of art.
Another path trekkers may want to trudge is the Literature Path (bungaku no komichi), a road marked with famous quotes from Japanese authors.
