Well-manicured streets congested with trams, locals, and a mixture of soaring office buildings and lavish shrines evoke a lively, pulsating atmosphere in Nagasaki, far from its international recall as the site of the world's second biggest nuclear attack in 1945.
A reminder of the atomic bomb tragedy that has fallen upon this harbor town is the Nagasaki Peace Park, whose focal point is the Hypocenter Park, where a dark stone pillar marks the exact location where the atomic bomb was dropped. The names of the identified victims were also inscribed in the column.
Believed to be the oldest of its kind in the country is the Oura Catholic Church, which dates back to 1864. Another legacy that the Dutch and the Portuguese traders left is the Glover Garden, the former residence of a pioneering business tycoon that kicked-off Japan's modernization. There are several European-style villas found in the garden's neighborhood, which is an ideal place to unwind and relax while eating a slice of kasutera or castella, a Portuguese sponge cake.
