More frequently called Itsukushima, Miyajima or "shrine-island" takes pride of its Itsukushima Shrine, dedicated to the three daughters of the Shinto deity Susanoo no Mikoto. Its dramatic "floating" torii gate and impressive design made this UNESCO World Heritage Site one of Japan's Three Great Views, along with Amanohashidate and Matsushima Bay.
Since the shrine was then considered as very holy, no peasant was allowed to set foot on the island. Today, however, the temple is open to everyone. The high tide makes the torii gate seem to float, but without the waters, visitors can simply walk on the muddy path to the temple.
Those who do not wish to be among with the crowds may want to seek seclusion in the neighboring Mt. Misen, the island's highest peak. There are several trails leading to the peak and to attractions hidden in thick vegetation. Among these sights is the Daisho-in Temple, an important place of adulation for the Shingo Buddhist sect.
