Matsue Travel Guide
Matsue might be small, yet it is capable of packing a weekend with activities such as lakeside sunset viewing, boat riding, and visits to a castle. Located west of Tottori, this laidback metropolis is often called the "water city" for its nearness to the lakes Shinji and Nakaumi, as well as to the Sea of Japan and the Ohashi River, on which it straddles.
Dubbed as the "black castle" for its well-preserved dark wooden tiles, the Matsue Castle is the sixth oldest, third tallest, and second largest of Japan's original twelve castles. Found north of the towering bastion is Matsue's samurai district, which houses several intact structures dating back to the feudal age.
Another notable tourist draw is the Former Hearn Residence, where one of the pioneering writers of oriental culture, the Greek Lacfadio Hearn, lived with his native Japanese wife.
Nature-lovers might have a blast upon visiting the vibrant flowers and greenery of Vogel Park, one of the world's largest greenhouses. After a day of roaming, one can retreat to the lakeside and watch the tangerine sunset.
